Iloilo City, Philippines — In pursuit of its mission to conserve the country’s endemic warty pigs (Sus philippensis), the Protect Phil Warty team actively participated in the 32nd Philippine Biodiversity Symposium held at Central Philippine University (CPU), Iloilo City.
Representing the team were Dr. Marjorie A. Cortes and Dr. Heherson A. Luza from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Visayas State University (VSU). This year’s symposium, themed “One Future: Biodiversity, Climate, and Health,” gathered researchers, conservationists, and advocates from across the country to share studies and best practices in conserving both wildlife and plant biodiversity in the Philippines.
The event also provided a vital platform for Protect PhilWarty to strengthen collaborations with key partners, including the Talarak Foundation and Energy Development Corporation (EDC), both of which play crucial roles in advancing the project’s mission of protecting the Philippine warty pig.

A significant highlight of the symposium was the formal launch of the Philippine Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (PBSAP) by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The PBSAP outlines the nation’s biodiversity protection and conservation roadmap from 2024 to 2040, reinforcing the collective responsibility to safeguard the country’s unique ecosystems.
The success of the symposium was made possible through the leadership of the Biodiversity Conservation Society of the Philippines (BCSP), alongside its partners and sponsors.
By taking part in this year’s gathering, the Protect Phil Warty team reaffirmed its strong commitment to the long-term, sustainable conservation of the Philippine warty pig, ensuring that this iconic species continues to thrive for future generations.
